Plastic, fertilizer, fuel, even cow farts — algae can make all this more sustainable, and even capture carbon. Here’s why we’re on the brink of an algae revolution. We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess. ► Check out our channel trailer: 🤍 ► Want to see more? Live aquarium plants are actually one of your best defenses against algae growth. Think of it like growing grass on a front lawn. The healthier the grass is, the less likely weeds (aka algae) are able to creep in. Let's talk about a few things you can do with the plants themselves to make sure you get a leg up on the conversation. 🛒 Shop our favorite beginner-friendly plants: 🤍 🟢 Get our Murphy polo shirt (limited edition): 🤍 🌿 Try Easy Green — the easiest, all-in-one fertilizer on the market! Algae has been used by humans for thousands of years, but the idea of using algae as a secret weapon to combat climate change is definitely a modern day concept. The more scientists delve into the biology of algae, the more species they find and the more they discover just how incredibly versatile this primordial organism really is. Algae is all around us and has many important uses. But what exactly is Algae and what are the different types of algae? We will learn about this and more in this video all about algae for kids! Algae (alga is the singular spelling) are a type of plant-like living things that make their food just like all other plants, from sunlight by photosynthesis. Algae are commonly found living in the sea, oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds, or even in aquariums. There are two different types of algae: macroalgae and microalgae. Macroalgae are something you are very familiar with seaweed. Microalgae are referred to as phytoplankton. Micro- means very small, so think of them as small plants that live in the ocean, rivers, ponds, or lakes. There are many different kinds of Algae from Seaweed, to Brown, Green and Red Algae and all have different purposes that we explore in the video! A tech startup can turn harmful algae into plastic foam, which could help clean up waterways and reduce demand for plastic. Mixing algae into plastic also traps carbon inside the products, which could be an important tool for fighting climate change. We went to Mississippi and Dongguan, China, to see how it's done. How they can cultivate thousands of tons of spirulina to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue every year. Spirulina is known as blue-green algae that grows both in fresh as well as salt water. Similar to plants it produces energy from sunlight through the photosynthesis process. It grows and thrives in warm water alkaline ponds and rivers. Protein is one of the important components in a diet. It is one of the best potential sources of protein. This protein in Spirulina is grown commercially in large-scale culture systems for human as well as animal consumption. Spirulina contains 40 to 80% protein content and its growth rate is very high. For its growth, it requires less water, land, and can grow in any climate in tropical regions. In commercial aquacultures such as fish, prawn, and livestock; Spirulina either in the wet or dried form is used as a complementary dietary ingredient. In developing countries, it is used as a potential source of food, feed, and fuel. For human nutrition, it is cultivated in large scale in clean waters and under controlled conditions while it is also grown in wastewaters and can be used in animal feed. In this video we're looking at my favourite/most popular algae eating fish for your community aquarium. Discard those ideas of keeping common plecos, sailfin plecos or Chinese algae eaters. This video goes through all the different types of algae grazing fish that are going to help keep your aquarium clean and algae free. Let me know what species you use at home to help keep algae under control in your aquarium. The species in the video are listed below to make finding them easier for you in the future. Bristlenose Catfish/pleco (ancistrus sp.) 15cm (5.9") Hard working medium sized suckermouth catfish brilliant at eating algae off of aquarium surfaces such as rocks, wood, plants and glass. Dwarf suckermouth catfish/Otocinclus (Otocinclus sp.) Another hard working community fish great at cleaning your aquarium. Growing to only 5cm (1.96") these are perfect for a smaller aquarium, but remember always keep them in a group as they like company. Like the bristlenose Catfish they are great at eating algae off of aquarium surfaces such as rocks, wood, plants and glass. Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata) One of the best shrimps for your aquarium famed for their hard work and non stop cleaning. Getting to around 5cm (1.96") they are brilliant for the smaller fish tanks. House them in a group to keep them happy, they will then help you with all those hard to reach places in the aquarium. Amano shrimp video. 🤍 Siamese Flying Fox (Crossocheilus oblongus) These fish are fantastic at controlling hair algae, blanket week or black beard algae in the aquarium. Getting to around 15cm (5.9") they need to be housed in a suitable aquarium. Kept best as a single or shoal of three or more. Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina heteropoda) The smaller of the two shrimp on this list getting to around 3cm (1.2") these are an awesome algae eater for nano aquariums. Kept as a group they will normally multiply and keep on top of uneaten food and unsightly algaes. Nerite snail (Nerite sp.) A group of snail species very good at controlling algaes in your fish tank, especially good at eating stubborn green spot algae. Growing to around 4cm (1.57") multiple snails can be housed together to help keep your aquarium clean. Livebearers Fish such as the Molly, Guppy, Platy and Swordtail are superb grazers for most community aquariums, sizes can vary but certain ones can reach 15cm (5.9") so choose wisely. #aquarium #aquascape #aquascaping #fishtank #aquarist #fish #fishkeeping #aquariumplants #communityfish #communityfishtank #matt_swfishkeeper #fishshopmatt #plantedaquarium #plantedtank #corydoras #algae #algaeeaters

Researchers have discovered how to use cyanobacteria—commonly called blue-green algae—to continuously power a microprocessor for a span of more than six months. The system, which uses inexpensive and largely recyclable materials, contains a type of non-toxic photosynthetic algae called Synechocystis. The research was published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science. “We were impressed by how consistently the system worked over a long period of time—we thought it might stop after a few weeks but it just kept going,” says Paolo Bombelli, a researcher from the University of Cambridge and lead author of the paper. The scientists created an enclosure out of aluminum and clear plastic and put the bacteria inside it. The device, which is about the size of a AA battery, was placed on a windowsill in Bombelli’s home during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2021 and remained there from February to August. The bacteria powered an Arm Cortex M0+ processor—a microprocessor widely used in the network of appliances connected to the internet, also called the Internet of Things (IoT). The researchers programmed the processor to perform cycles of 45 minutes of computation work followed by 15 minutes of standby. The cyanobacteria produced energy even without light, perhaps because they process some of their food in the dark, which generates an electrical current. Several billion IoT devices already exist, and that number is expected to rise to one trillion by 2035, per the study. Powering all those devices would require 109,000 tons of lithium, which is three times more than what the world produced in 2017. Carbon Dioxide removal from our atmosphere is now an unavoidable and essential aspect of our climate mitigation challenge in the 21st Century. We've left it so late that just reducing our emissions is no longer enough. Now a UK based company called Brilliant Planet has perfected a method that, at full scale, can drawdown 2 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide from our atmosphere every year while also restoring alkalinity levels to our ocean ecosystems.
